Orientation

What informal learning is

Informal learning is free-choice, self-directed, and driven by the learner's own interests and identity. It is not graded, sequenced, or compulsory — people pursue it because they want to. And it is where the great majority of a person's lifetime learning actually happens: the hours spent in classrooms are dwarfed by the hours spent learning in museums, media, conversation, hobbies, and everyday life.

The lifelong-learning point: Falk and Dierking estimate people spend only a few percent of their lives in formal schooling. The overwhelming share of what anyone knows about science, history, and the world is learned in free-choice settings across a lifetime.

The boundaries are porous. A field trip is a formal purpose enacted in an informal setting; a maker club is non-formal; a family's weekend at a science center is informal. Most learning ecosystems blend all three — the value is in how the settings connect across a learner's life.

Foundational framework

The Contextual Model of Learning

Falk and Dierking's Contextual Model of Learning frames a museum experience as the interaction of three overlapping contexts — personal, sociocultural, and physical — playing out over time. Learning is not a single event but a cumulative, meaning-making process shaped by all three at once.

Personal context

Who the learner already is

Prior knowledge, interests, beliefs, motivation, and the choice and control the visitor exercises. People make meaning from where they already stand.

Sociocultural context

Who they learn with

Within-group social mediation (family, friends) and interaction with staff, explainers, and other visitors — plus the cultural values the learner brings.

Physical context

Where it happens

Advance organizers and orientation, exhibit design, and what happens after the visit through reinforcing events and experiences outside the museum.

Synthesis: No single context explains learning. A visitor's takeaway emerges from the intersection of who they are, who they came with, and the designed environment — and it continues to develop over time, long after the visit, as later experiences reinforce and reshape it. This is why free-choice learning is best understood cumulatively, not from a single exit interview.

Six strands of informal science learning

The U.S. National Research Council's consensus report reframed "science learning" in informal settings as six intertwined strands — a broader account than content knowledge alone, deliberately including interest, reasoning, reflection, practice, and identity.

Strand 1

Spark interest & excitement

Experience excitement, interest, and motivation to learn about phenomena in the natural and physical world.

Strand 2

Understand scientific knowledge

Come to generate, understand, remember, and use concepts, explanations, arguments, models, and facts related to science.

Strand 3

Engage in scientific reasoning

Manipulate, test, explore, predict, question, observe, and make sense of the natural and physical world.

Strand 4

Reflect on science

Reflect on science as a way of knowing — on the processes, concepts, and institutions of science, and on their own process of learning about phenomena.

Strand 5

Use the tools & language of science

Participate in scientific activities and learning practices with others, using scientific language and tools.

Strand 6

Identify with the scientific enterprise

Think about themselves as science learners and develop an identity as someone who knows about, uses, and sometimes contributes to science.

Why it matters: The strands make interest (Strand 1) and identity (Strand 6) legitimate outcomes of learning, not just precursors to it. In free-choice settings, sparking interest and helping people see themselves as "science people" may be the most consequential — and most measurable-in-the-long-run — outcomes an institution can pursue.

The visitor identity explorer

In Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience, John Falk argues that visitors arrive with identity-related motivations that shape what they do and what they take away. Select a motivation to see how that visitor behaves — and how you would design for them.

The Explorer

Driven by personal curiosity and interest. Explorers come to be intellectually stimulated by whatever catches their attention and expect the museum to feed a general love of discovery. They roam, follow their nose, and want to find something new.

The Facilitator

Socially motivated — their visit is about someone else. Parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends who come primarily to enable the learning and enjoyment of the people they brought. Their own satisfaction depends on their companions having a good experience.

The Professional / Hobbyist

Comes with a specific, content-driven goal tied to a profession or serious hobby. They feel a close tie between the institution's content and their own expertise or passion, and they visit to satisfy a particular objective rather than to browse.

They arrive asking: "Does this collection or exhibit deliver on the specific thing I came for?"

The Experience Seeker

Motivated by the museum as a destination. They come to see the important place and its "must-see" objects — to have been there. Satisfaction comes from the icon, the landmark, and the sense of having experienced a significant site.

They arrive asking: "What are the iconic things I have to see here?"

The Recharger

Seeks a contemplative, restorative experience — spiritual, reflective, or simply a refuge from everyday life. The museum is a place to slow down, recharge, and reflect. Learning, if it comes, arrives through calm and immersion rather than activity.

They arrive asking: "Can I find a beautiful, peaceful space to reflect?"

Identity is situational, not fixed. The same person may be a Facilitator on a family Saturday and an Explorer alone on a weekday. Falk's point is that people enact a motivation for this visit — so designing for the full set, rather than an "average visitor," serves the real diversity of any audience.
Craft of the exhibit

Designing exhibits & experiences

Exhibit design is where learning theory becomes physical. The craft is to attract attention, hold it long enough for meaning to form, and offer layers of interpretation that reward both the passer-by and the deep-diver — while remaining accessible to everyone.

Hooks & dwell time

Two behavioral measures dominate exhibit evaluation: attracting power (does it stop people?) and holding power (how long do they stay?). Dwell time is a proxy for engagement.

Interactivity

Active Prolonged Engagement

APE — from the Exploratorium — pushes past simple button-pressing toward open-ended exhibits where visitors investigate, ask their own questions, and stay engaged far longer.

Interpretation

Tilden's principles

Freeman Tilden held that interpretation must relate to the visitor's experience, reveal meaning (not just facts), be an art, provoke rather than instruct, and address the whole.

Layering

Multiple entry points

Layered interpretation lets a five-second reader, a five-minute reader, and a specialist each get value from the same exhibit — headline, caption, and deep content stacked.

Access

Universal design

Universal Design for Learning and physical accessibility — multisensory content, reach ranges, contrast, captions — make exhibits usable by the widest range of visitors by default.

Facilitation & programs

Exhibits rarely teach alone. Docents, explainers, and educators mediate the experience, and the strongest learning often happens in the conversation an exhibit sparks. Programs — especially school field trips — need deliberate structure to pay off.

Family & intergenerational learning

Most museum visitors come in social groups, and families learn together. Parents scaffold, connect exhibits to shared history, and model curiosity; children drive the agenda. Designing for the group — shared sightlines, conversation prompts, multi-age tasks — supports the sociocultural context where much free-choice learning actually occurs.

Knowing whether it works

Evaluating informal learning

Evaluation in informal settings mirrors the design process, moving from front-end (before you build) to formative (as you build) to summative (after you open). The challenge: free-choice outcomes — interest, identity, long-term impact — resist the tidy measures classrooms rely on.

Front-end evaluation

Before design: study the intended audience's prior knowledge, interests, misconceptions, and expectations to ground the concept in what visitors actually bring.

Formative evaluation

During development: prototype and test exhibit mock-ups with real visitors, observe what confuses or engages, and iterate before committing to fabrication.

Summative evaluation

After opening: assess the finished exhibit or program against its goals — engagement, learning, and impact — to inform future work and account to funders.

Timing & tracking

Unobtrusively map how visitors move and where they stop, using attracting and holding power as behavioral proxies for engagement at each element.

Embedded & behavioral measures

Capture learning in the flow of activity — what visitors build, say, and do — rather than relying only on entry/exit tests that free-choice visitors resist.

Interviews & longitudinal follow-up

Exit and delayed interviews, and Personal Meaning Mapping, surface meaning that accrues over time — because the real impact often shows up weeks or years later.

Why free-choice outcomes are hard to measure. Visits are short, voluntary, and self-directed; visitors won't sit for tests; learning is cumulative and shows up long after the visit; and the most valued outcomes — interest, curiosity, identity — are the hardest to quantify. Rigor here means triangulating behavior, talk, and delayed reflection, and being honest that a single exit survey cannot capture a lifetime learning system.
Who is served

Equity, access & community

Free-choice learning institutions are public goods — but access to them is unequal. Who visits, who feels welcome, and whose stories are told are questions of equity that increasingly sit at the center of the field's practice.

Participation

Who visits — and who doesn't

Visitation skews toward higher income and formal education, and the field carries a history of excluding many communities. Broadening participation means confronting cost, transportation, representation, and the sense of whether "this place is for people like me."

Co-creation

Community as partner, not audience

Community co-creation — sharing authority over what is collected, told, and displayed — moves institutions from speaking to communities toward building with them. Nina Simon's "participatory museum" reframes visitors as contributors.

Responsive practice

Culturally responsive & multilingual

Multilingual labels and programs, culturally responsive interpretation, and staff and leadership that reflect the community make the institution legible and welcoming to more people.

Identity & belonging

Broadening who becomes a "science person"

Because identity (Strand 6) is a core outcome, equity work is also learning work: helping historically excluded youth see themselves as capable, belonging participants in science, history, and the arts.

Equity is a design constraint, not an add-on. Access, representation, and belonging shape every earlier section — where learning happens, who the "visitor" is assumed to be, what exhibits assume, and what outcomes get measured. Treating it as central rather than peripheral is what makes an informal-learning institution genuinely public.
