Qualitative research seeks to understand how people interpret and make meaning of their experiences, in context and in their own words. It asks how and why, not how many.

Narrative inquiry

Studies the stories individuals tell to make sense of their lives, restorying them into a coherent chronological account. The unit of analysis is the individual and their experience over time.

Phenomenology

Describes the essence of a lived experience shared by several people who have all encountered the same phenomenon — reducing individual accounts to "what" was experienced and "how."

Grounded theory

Generates a theory of a process or interaction, grounded in and emerging from the data through constant comparison and theoretical sampling — not borrowed from the literature.

Ethnography

Describes and interprets the shared patterns of culture — values, behaviors, language — of a group in its natural setting, through prolonged immersion and participant observation.

Boundaries blur in practice. A study can be a case study analyzed with grounded-theory coding, or an ethnography that restories one member's account. Name a primary tradition for coherence, then borrow deliberately — and say so.

The research design workflow

Nine stages from puzzle to defensible study

Qualitative design is iterative, not linear — but these stages give you a spine to return to.

Frame the problem & purpose

Locate a gap; write a purpose statement that signals the approach ("explore," "describe the essence of," "generate a theory of").

Craft the research questions

One central question + a few sub-questions, open and non-directional, aligned to the chosen tradition.

Select the approach & paradigm

Make the philosophical stance explicit; choose among the five traditions to match intent and question.

Design purposeful sampling

Choose a sampling strategy and criteria; plan for saturation or sufficient depth, not statistical representativeness.

Secure access & ethics

IRB approval, informed consent, confidentiality, and a reflexive account of your positionality.

Framing the study

From problem to research question

A study lives or dies on its central question. The craft is to travel cleanly from a felt problem, to a purpose statement that signals your approach, to a central question that is open, non-directional, and answerable with qualitative data.

The purpose statement — Creswell's script

A single sentence that encodes intent, approach, phenomenon, participants, and site:

"The purpose of this [approach] study is to [understand / describe / explore / generate a theory of] the [central phenomenon] for [participants] at [site]."

The verb is not decoration — describe the essence of signals phenomenology; generate a theory of signals grounded theory; explore the culture of signals ethnography.

The central question — five rules

  • Open — begins with what or how, never whether or does
  • Non-directional — no hypothesized effect or comparison baked in
  • Singular focus — one central question, then 2–5 sub-questions
  • Tradition-aligned — its verb matches the chosen approach
  • Answerable — with words and meaning, not counts or causal proof

Test it: if a number or a yes/no could answer it, it is not yet a qualitative central question.

Worked before & after — sharpening the question by approach

Phenomenology

Before: "Does online learning make first-generation students feel isolated?"

After: "What is the essence of the experience of academic belonging for first-generation students taking fully online courses?"

Why: the before is a closed, yes/no, causal question. The after seeks the shared essence of a lived experience — the phenomenological move.

Grounded theory

Before: "How satisfied are new teachers with their mentoring program?"

After: "What theory explains the process by which novice teachers develop professional identity during their first year?"

Why: satisfaction is a survey construct. The after targets a process unfolding over time — grounded theory's home ground.

Case study

Before: "Is the district's 1:1 laptop rollout effective?"

After: "How did one middle school enact and make sense of a 1:1 laptop initiative during its first implementation year?"

Why: "effective" begs a measurement study. The after bounds a case in time and place and asks for in-depth understanding.

Ethnography

Before: "What percentage of staff follow the school's discipline policy?"

After: "How do teachers and students at one high school collectively construct and enforce the norms of 'respect' in daily practice?"

Why: the after studies shared cultural meaning-in-action, from the inside — the ethnographic aim.

Qualitative samples are selected for information richness, not representativeness. Patton's typology names the intent behind each choice.

Saturation is the point at which new data stop yielding new codes or insight. It is a claim you must justify with evidence, not assert — document when and how it was reached.

Interviews

The workhorse

Structured · semi-structured · unstructured. Semi-structured — an interview guide with room to follow the participant — is the qualitative default.

Focus groups

Meaning in interaction

6–10 participants; the interaction between them is the data. Strong for norms, shared language, and range of views.

Observation

Seeing practice

Along a continuum from complete observer to complete participant. Recorded as descriptive + reflective field notes.

Documents & artifacts

Traces of the setting

Policies, records, images, and objects — unobtrusive data that contextualize and triangulate interviews.

What makes an interview question good

  • Open-ended — invites description, not yes/no
  • Singular — one idea per question
  • Neutral — not leading or loaded

Instrument design

Designing the interview guide

A semi-structured guide is a map, not a script. It moves from warm, concrete "grand-tour" invitations to focused "mini-tour" detail, held open by probes that follow the participant wherever the meaning is.

Grand-tour

Broad, experiential openers

Spradley's grand-tour question invites a wide narrative account and lets the participant set the terrain. It is descriptive and non-threatening.

Mini-tour

Zoom into specifics

Once a topic surfaces, mini-tour questions drill into a particular episode, routine, or example — the concrete detail behind the generality.

Probes

Deepen without leading

Neutral prompts — silence, "say more," "what was that like?" — that elicit depth without supplying the answer.

Guide hygiene: one idea per question; keep the participant's words; sequence rapport before sensitive topics; write probes into the guide so you don't improvise leading ones; and pilot it with 1–2 people before the real interviews.

Theme: For these students, belonging is not granted by the institution but brokered — decoded and unlocked through relationships that translate the hidden curriculum. The theme is an analytic claim, warranted by the codes and answerable to the research question.

Thematic analysis vs. grounded theory vs. IPA

Three of the most common analytic methods share a coding vocabulary but differ in aim, epistemology, and product. Choosing among them is a design decision, not a preference.

Combining strands

Mixed methods designs

Mixed methods integrate qualitative and quantitative strands to answer a question neither could alone. What distinguishes the core designs is timing (concurrent or sequential), priority, and the point of integration (Creswell & Plano Clark).

Convergent

QUAL + QUAN, then compare

Collect both strands concurrently and with roughly equal priority, analyze separately, then merge to see where they converge, diverge, or expand each other.

Notation: QUAL + QUAN → interpret

Use when: you want corroboration and a fuller picture of the same phenomenon.

Explanatory sequential

QUAN → qual explains

Lead with quantitative results, then use a qualitative follow-up to explain the numbers — the surprises, outliers, and mechanisms behind the statistics.

Use when: you have results that need the "why" behind them.

Exploratory sequential

QUAL → build & test

Begin qualitatively to explore an unknown, use findings to build an instrument or intervention, then test it quantitatively on a larger sample.

Integration is the point. Running two strands and reporting them in separate chapters is a "parallel" study, not a mixed-methods one. Rigor lives in the joint display or narrative that brings the strands into genuine conversation.

Lincoln & Guba reframed rigor for interpretive work as four criteria. Check the strategies your study uses to gauge how defensible it is.

In qualitative work you are the data-collection instrument — which makes ethics and self-awareness methodological, not just procedural.

Representation

Writing up qualitative findings

The findings section is where analysis becomes an argument. The craft is to organize around your themes, let participants' voices carry the evidence, and interweave description with interpretation so the reader both sees the data and understands your claim about it.

Structure a findings section

  • Organize by theme, not by question or participant — themes are your findings; number and name them
  • Open each theme with an analytic assertion — tell the reader the claim before the evidence
  • Support with 2–3 well-chosen quotations from different participants, attributed with pseudonyms
  • Follow each quote with interpretation — never let a quotation stand alone as if it explains itself
  • Show range — include confirming and disconfirming instances; report negative cases
  • Save cross-theme synthesis for the discussion, tied back to the literature

Using quotations well

  • Illustrate, don't substitute — a quote is evidence for your point, not the point itself
  • Prefer vivid, representative excerpts over the longest ones; edit ellipses honestly
  • Attribute and contextualize — "Maria, a second-year student, explained…"
  • Balance the chorus — don't let one articulate participant dominate
  • Use short embedded phrases (in-vivo) mid-sentence and reserve block quotes for depth
The description–interpretation balance. Too much raw quotation with no analysis is journalism; too much interpretation with thin evidence is assertion. Wolcott's frame — description, analysis, interpretation — is a useful discipline: show what happened, identify the patterns, then say what it means. Aim for a rhythm of assertion → evidence → interpretation, repeated theme by theme.
Failure modes

Common pitfalls & how to avoid them

Most weak qualitative studies fail in predictable ways. Naming the failure mode is the first step to designing against it.

Pitfall

Thin description

Reporting what was said without the context that makes it meaningful, so readers can't judge transferability.

Avoid it: write thick description — setting, tone, and the meaning behind the act, not just the act.

Pitfall

Cherry-picking quotes

Selecting only quotations that fit the desired story, hiding how typical or rare each view actually was.

Avoid it: report prevalence honestly, seek disconfirming cases, and keep an audit trail of code frequencies.

Pitfall

Going native

Over-identifying with participants until you lose the analytic distance needed to interpret critically.

Avoid it: reflexive journaling, peer debriefing, and scheduled analytic distance from the field.

Analysis-as-summary

Themes that merely restate what participants said ("participants talked about stress") instead of making an analytic claim.

Avoid it: a theme should be a sentence that asserts something — a relationship, tension, or process.

Method–question mismatch

Claiming grounded theory but producing description, or "phenomenology" on a topic no one has lived.

Avoid it: align verb, question, data, and analysis to one tradition — the master table is your checklist.

Ignoring reflexivity

Writing as a neutral observer while your positionality silently shapes access, rapport, and interpretation.

Avoid it: state positionality explicitly and trace how it plausibly shaped what you saw and concluded.
